Your website might look perfectly fine — and still be sending customers away every day. The tricky part is you rarely see it happen. Here are five common culprits, and how to fix each one, in plain English.
Most business owners assume that if their site is online and looks decent, it’s doing its job. But a website has one real job: turning a curious visitor into someone who contacts you or buys. When that’s not happening, it’s usually one of these five things quietly getting in the way.
1. It's slow to load
People are impatient online. If your site takes more than a few seconds to appear, many visitors simply leave before they’ve seen anything — and you never even know they were there.
The fix: compress your images, cut anything unnecessary, and make sure your site is built with speed in mind. A fast site doesn’t just feel better — it directly wins you more customers.
"Half your visitors decide whether to stay in the first few seconds — long before they read a word."
2. It's hard to use on a phone
Most people will visit your website on their phone first. If they have to pinch, zoom, or squint to read anything, they’ll give up and try a competitor whose site just works.
The fix: your site should look and feel great on a small screen — big tap targets, readable text, and no sideways scrolling. This isn’t optional any more; it’s where most of your visitors are.

3. It's not clear what you do
Visitors decide in seconds whether they’re in the right place. If your homepage is vague or clever instead of clear, people leave confused — even if you’re exactly who they need.
The fix: say plainly what you do, who it’s for, and what to do next. Clarity beats cleverness every time.
4. There's no obvious next step
Someone likes what they see — now what? If there’s no clear button to book, buy, or get in touch, that interest quietly fades away.
- Put a clear call-to-action where people can see it.
- Make it easy to contact you — don’t hide the details.
- Repeat the invitation as they scroll down the page.
5. It doesn't build trust
People buy from businesses they trust. If your site has no reviews, no real photos, and no sign of the people behind it, visitors hesitate — and hesitation usually means they leave.
The fix: add genuine testimonials, real photos, and a friendly “about” section. Show there are real, capable people behind the work.
The takeaway
You don’t need a fancy website — you need one that’s fast, clear, easy on a phone, and built to earn trust. Fix these five things and you’ll turn more of your existing visitors into real customers.
